Common symptoms
- Red sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth
- Sores that burst and leave golden-brown crusts
- Itching, or skin that feels sore
- Sores spreading to other parts of the body
How we can help
- A check of the affected skin
- An antiseptic cream for small patches
- An antibiotic cream or tablets, if needed
The pharmacist will decide what is right for you. Not everyone needs medicine, and some people may need to see a GP instead.
Things you can try at home
- Keep sores clean and dry, and try not to touch or scratch them
- Wash your hands often and use your own towel
- Wash flannels and bedding on a hot wash
- Stay off school or work until the sores have crusted over, or for 48 hours after starting antibiotics
Get urgent help if
- Sores spreading quickly or covering a large area
- A high temperature or feeling unwell
- Sores near the eyes
- It keeps coming back
Call NHS 111 for urgent advice, or 999 in an emergency.
